Early in my career in journalism, I had the honor and pleasure of working for a year as a staff writer at the Huntington Long-Islander (W. Whitman, founder), under EIC Shirley Perlman.
A few years after I'd moved on, Shirley joined Newsday, where, in 1987, she claimed her place in history with near-daily, on-the-scene coverage of the ill-fated and odiferous voyage of the Mobro 4000, a/k/a the Long Island Garbage Barge.
